9-1-1, Is For Emergencies, Right?

During my 17 years as a First Responder, I had my fair share of Emergency 9-1-1, calls. You train, you practiced, and you were ready, to go to any call, right?

That is what they taught us anyway.

However not all 9-1-1 calls are emergency calls. But you do not know that until you get there. Sure, there are fines and fees for abusing 9-1-1 calls, however, I am not really sure, I remember any fines or fees issued.

One such case stands out in my mind. And to be fair, your definition might not be my definition of the word: Emergency.

We received a 911 Call one evening.

My partner was coming in from the north, as I was approaching the house from the south. The call was from a young boy who was crying, yelling, and from our operator, She, said he sounded scared, and yelled, “My brother.”

Having grown up with an older Brother, this call could go anywhere.

As the front door opened for me, I took a quick glance into the house for signs of trouble, or any reason why we should be there.

The little boy ran TO ME, AND was hugging me, crying, and had,

B/B/Q sauce on his face, his hands, and my uniform. But all of that was ok. The boy is safe…
