My answer is, Self Esteem.

An inmate compliments a a Corrections Officer, and more, and more talking through the bars, and someone with low self-esteem can be swept away. This works outside the bars as well.

It is interesting to me, someone with a career, and a family, would throw all that away, knowing they will be caught too.

It is a very sad case all around.
