Walking past a tree bare of leaves today

As I walked past the above tree in a parking lot, a poem started forming in my head. Gerald Washington and others will tell you, you need to write these words and thoughts down, so you won’t forget them.

I hope you enjoy it. The Life of a Leaf or, Please “Leaf” me Alone

Why do people say
Protect the trees
But no one ever says
Protect the leaves.

I am a leaf too
And people love us when we change colors
But they have no problem
Running over us with rakes and big mowers.

They will rake us into a pile
Then the real fun begins
With the kids
Who love to jump in.

Then they throw us up
High into the air.
I am just a leaf
But they really don’t care.
