What is in your name?

Today’s challenge is titled: Write about your name. Who named you and why? Does your name have meaning? The answer to that question for me is both yes and I don’t know.?

Yes, my family name has meaning

My family name has meaning to me because it is my family name. My family name has a history, and some of that history is conflicting. Even the spelling of my family name has changed over the years.

I get all my family history of our name, which has been handed down over the generations from my Great, Great, Great Grandaddy Pappy, which has since been translated by my Grandfather to me.

First the spelling

Originally my name was Newman, which is of German heritage. The original spelling had the letter “U” instead of a “W” in the spelling. And the letter “U” supposedly had two dots above the “U”. I have no idea if any of that is correct or what it all means. Apparently, when my family moved to this country, they changed the spelling of our name…
